Epilepsy in dogs GSD?

I have researched and think my dog sufferred a 'grande mal ?' last Sunday, today Sat. Was straight on phenobarb on Sunday (following emergency Vet call out) and came off Tuesday. Think he had another minor fit Friday/Saturday morning whilst I was asleep and back on the phenobarb today. Is sufferring the well docd side effects, ie restless, increased appetite for food and water but with a twist. He is constantly crying/whining and I mean constantly ie literally doesnt stop. He also will not sleep. Is this normal, has anyone else experienced the same ? And yes he is going to the Vets when they open in the morning.
