The easiest place for you to spin out away from your partner is at the end of the second half of a reverse turn. For him, that'll be like leading a throwaway oversway, but he lets go. This stuff is a lot harder to describe than to demonstrate, and if you could make a trip or two to your local ballroom studio, they could show you and dance you through it in no time at all.
