How is the walk from BART's Downtown Berkeley Station to UC Berkeley?

Cal says "under half a mile" but I'll have luggage too; not heavy, just bersome. Also, how safe is the walk during the day? Is the area pedestrian friendly? Sorry in advance for being such a socal noob orz.
