Interested in learning about music. reading of etc.?

I am starting to try and get into music seriously. I'm interested in learning how to read and understand it so i can converse with other musicians. I'd like a jump start but also a deeper knowledge. I can't afford to pay for schooling. What would be some inexpensive ways to learn. I have enjoyed music all my life so I get it on a listeners level. I know maybe more than I think but would appreciate any advise and incite. Thank You
